Today we went to Universal Studios. We caught the Metro Subway which is just one block away and it is only 5 stops to Universal City. The subway stations are really clean unlike New York. When we got to Universal Station we only had to cross the road diagonally to catch the free shuttle. We were glad we did because although it wasn't that far, it was up a very steep hill.
Universal Studios is amazing. It is like a theme park and there is so much to do. We went to Waterworld first and it was a stunt show on water. One of the actors was an Australian. It was pretty spectacular, they rode jet skis and a boat and it was a goodies versus the baddies. A lot of water went on the first few roads when they spun the jet boats around. In the finale, a plane came flying in and crashed, everyone ducked because they thought it was coming into the audience!
Then we went to the special effects show ad it was great. They used some volunteers from the audience and in one of them he cut into a ladies arm. Blood went everywhere and it looked so real but it was a special knife.
Next we did the Studio Tour. I would recommend doing this first if you come here. There was a 45 minute wait when we got there and apparently it gets longer as the day goes on. You get a pair of 3D glasses then board a tram with and head off. They take you through the studio lots and then through different villages. We stopped at the western one and next minute it was raining on one side of the tram and then this flash flood ace down the street and washed a wagon away. It was very realistic.
Then we went in this tunnel and the lights were out. We were told to put our 3d glasses on and next minute there were dinosaurs coming at us from every angle. eventhe tram started shaking and moving as if it was being thrown around by the dinosaurs. Next King Kong came and fought with the dinosaurs. it was amazing.
We saw Wisteria Lane and all the houses from Desperate Housewives, and the cove from Jaws. The shark came right up to our tram and scared most of the people as they weren't expecting it. We also saw the scene from The War of the Worlds where the plane had crashed into the neighbourhood. It was a real plane too. We saw so much more and it was all amazing.
When we got back we had lunch. I tried to get something healthy but the queues were crazy so ended up with a hot dog. Won't be getting one of those again in a hurry! Then we went into the House of Horrors. It was pretty tame but we had some youngsters in front of us that screamed at every shadow so I walked around with my fingers in my ears.
Annamaree checked out the shops and then we caught the shuttle back and then caught the subway home. We were a bit disoriented when we came out as the exit wasn't the same place we had gone in but we soon worked it out. Back to the hotel and we both had a snooze. My sore throat turned into a bit of a head cold so I welcomed the rest.
We headed back to our usual haunt for dinner and this time we had Thai. Annamaree had a chicken Massaman Curry and I had Pad Thai. Food is generally very cheap.
This is our last night in Los Angeles and I have to say it is my least favourite place.
Tomorrow we head to Anaheim and Disneyland. Our holiday is almost over as we fly out on Wedesday US time and arrive in Canberra on Friday morning.

Los Angeles Day 2
Great breakfast included at this hotel. Lovely dining room with the usual continental breakfast but there were also two chefs that cook omelettes eggs or whatever you want while you wait.
We did a tour of Los Angeles today. Went through downtown, Olvera Street which is the historic birthplace of Los Angeles and was founded in 1781. We also went through Chinatown and stopped in Hollywood at Grauman's Chinese Theatre. I took a photo of Hugh Jackman's hand prints. We also saw the Kodak Theatre where the Oscars used to be held and the walk of fame where movie stars have their star in the sidewalk. We also got to see the famous Hollywood sign. We went down Sunset Strip and into Beverly Hills where the celebrities live and has it's own police force. We went past lots of celebrity homes, Beyonce, Justin Bieber and many more. Then we went down Rodeo Drive with all the high end shops.
We stopped at the historic Farmer's Market and the Grove for lunch and some shopping. Then we changed buses to go to Santa Monica. We walked along the beach and there was so much going on. There is all sorts of exercise equipment, a tightrope, volleyball and much more. We walked on to the famous Santa Monica pier which has a big Ferris wheel, a carousel, stalls and amusements. There were so many people there as it is summer holidays and a Saturday.
Back to the hotel and I had to go and buy some analgesics for my throat and have a lie down.
Then we had dinner at a great French restaurant. I had sole with lemon pesto and Annamarie had lobster risotto. It was very nice.
Tomorrow we are going to Universal Studios.

Los Angeles Day 1
This morning we left San Simeon, still without being able to see the ocean view because of the fog. Again for the most part the drive was along the coast with some amazing views.
We called into a small place called Pismo Beach for a coffee and pulled up at a cafe that makes their own cinnamon scrolls. They looked delicious and some had pecans on top and some had vanilla icing. We didn't indulge but just had our coffee. There happened to be a shoe shop next door and Annamaree found an unusual pair that fitted perfectly.
Back onto the freeway and we passed through cattle country with mainly black and red Angus (I have only seen Angus cattle since I have been here). Then there were huge paddocks of vegetables and lots of pickers. We ran in and out of fog at various times and also had many views of the coastline. Once we got to Santa Barbara the road got very busy and was 3 lanes on both sides. We didn't want to stop for lunch there as it was too big so we continued on and stopped at Ventura.
We got back on the road (humming Ventura Highway) and as we got closer to Los Angeles the traffic got really busy and the lanes increased to 4 each side. The good old GPS got us safely to our hotel, the Hollywood Hotel. We then took the car back to the nearest Hertz place and got a really nice guy who even drove us back to our hotel. I was so pleased to not have to go in the car again!
Our hotel room is really lovely, two queen sized beds, 2 lounge chairs, a footstool, a desk and chair, fridge microwave and decent sized bathroom and even a balcony.
After settling in we walked down about nine blocks along North Vermont Street to find somewhere for dinner. We settled on a Mediterranean cafe and both had lovely meals. We then wandered further up the street and discovered lots of great eating places. On the way back we came across a retro shop that had the most amazing things in it.
When we got back to the motel we booked a 3/4 day tour of LA, some stars homes (wasn't really interested in that but all the tours have it) and the beaches and Santa Monica. Then we did some washing and are looking forward to bed after a stressful day.

San Simeon
This morning we had breakfast at the motel before heading off to San Simeon. The GPS got us a bit confused and we had to do a couple of loops before we were on the right road but eventually got there. We decided to fill up with petrol and it was a bit weird because if you are paying cash you have to go and pay before you fill up! Of course we had no idea how much it would take so we paid $50 but it only ended up being $29 so then you have to go back and get a refund.
As we drove along there were heaps of people on the side of the road for miles and miles in camp chairs with camera waiting for the cars going to the concourse in Carmel to go by. Thankfully they were going the other way and we got to see lots of them.
We followed the coast road again and the views were amazing. We stopped at Big Sur for a coffee and it was a lovely spot with a shop that sold crafts made by local artisans. We drove on and as we got closer to San Simeon the fog was rolling in to the point that we couldn't see the ocean anymore. We checked in to the motel and we would have lovely ocean views except for the pea souper! The receptionist said that yesterday was a lovely clear day.
We had lunch in the Bar and Grill and because we were here earlier than we expected we decided to change our tour of Hearst Castle to today so we would then have all day tomorrow to get to Los Angeles.
Hearst Castle is not far from the motel and there were spots on the next tour so we changed our tickets. You had to go out a door to get on a bus and you guessed it, an AFP. I am getting good at saying no to the photo ops!
The bus takes you on a very long winding road up to the castle. On the way half a dozen deer jumped out in front of us. The castle was amazing. There were three bungalows and the castle. Individual pieces were wonderful but I found it too over the top with the mix of art and furniture of all different styles. It was incredible the amount of money that was spent building and furnishing it. After the tour you can wander around the grounds and when you are ready you walk past the tennis courts and amazing mosaic indoor roman pool. It was huge. The bus then takes a different road down to the visitor centre and you can then watch a movie about William Randolph Hearst and the building of the castle in the theatre.
We then came back to the motel after buying something for tea. I have been fighting off a sore throat for a week but I think it is getting the better of me. Here's hoping I can hold it off for another week.
Tomorrow is our biggest challenge as we will be driving to Los Angeles.

Monterey Day 2
Had breakfast at the motel this morning. Lots of choices, 2 types of cereal, bread and crumpets for toasting, jams, muffins, fruit, OJ, tea and coffee.
Then we headed off to Carmel today. To get there we went on the Seventeen Mile Drive which cost $10 to do! The road wandered along the coast and we went through 9 golf courses! It was a really pretty drive and we went past Pebble Beach. People had stacked the pebbles (some were quite large) into different formations and there was lots of seaweed in the water. There were plenty of lookout points - Point Joe, Bird Rock, Seal Rock and Lone Cypress to name a few.
Then we came to Carmel. Clint Eastwood was a former mayor. It is a pretty little town by the sea and reminded me a bit of Tilba only on a much larger scale. We eventually found a park as it was very busy. We had a great time wandering along the streets, checking the shops out. For the people who live in Carmel, there are no street addresses. You either live north or south of Ocean Avenue and on the west or east side of the street. Dogs in America are very spoilt and you can take them into most restaurants and shops. Pretty amazing, you wouldn't be able to do that in Australia. In fact when we were in San Francisco a guide told us that there are more dogs than children in San Francisco.
We had lunch at the award winning Dametra Cafe which has a Mediterranean menu. I had a chicken, pesto and pine nut pizza and Annamaree had Spanokopita. The food was delicious and even though it was past lunch time it was packed. As soon as a table of people left it was immediately filled. They even gave us a complimentary baklava before we left.
We then drove back to Monterey and Annamaree only went on the wrong side of the road once so things are looking up! We had a quick look at Fisherman's Wharf and then treated ourselves to a manicure. A wander through the Del Monte Shopping Centre and Macy's and then we went to see what was on at the picture theatre but there was nothing that interested us.
Tomorrow we are off to San Simeon.

Monterey Day 1
Had a little sleep in this morning and then had breakfast at the hotel. Managed to get our bags down in the antiquated lift and then flagged down a cab to take us to Fisherman's Wharf to pick up our rental car.
The guy who served us at Hertz wasn't very helpful. Just gave us the keys, said the car was in 2c in the multi level car park and gave us a voucher to get out of the car park. I had to ask if they had some maps we could use and we got a map of California and some scant directions on how to get out of San Francisco. Annamaree went to get the car while I stood with our luggage and there was a parking spot right up until she came out so she had to do a lap of the block. In the end she just pulled into the car park driveway and we quickly piled in our luggage and moved on before we got into trouble.
Off we set with Annamaree driving and me navigating (don't laugh Peter!) and trying to keep her on the right side of the road. Thankfully she only turned onto the wrong side twice and there were no cars around.
When we turned off Geary Boulevard onto the freeway to the South there were fantastic views of the Pacific Ocean. Amazing to think it is the same waters that lap the east coast of Australia. We drove down along the coast and it is very similar to the Great Ocean Road only much longer. We stopped at Daly City for something to eat and drink and a toilet stop. At least we think it was Daly City, there is a huge lack of signage here from town names to speed limits. There was a big cement wharf and lots of people were fishing off it.
Back onto the freeway with lots more ocean views. There is a lot of agriculture mainly vegetables and strawberries. We passed several large artichoke farms. We also saw lots of groups of pickers bringing in the vegetables.
We were looking for somewhere to have lunch and pulled into a place off the highway. It was very alternative. There was a wooden caravan outside that was a shop and sold books, soap, bread and cheese and a couple of other things. In the main building they sold organic fruit and vegetables as well as fruit tarts, chocolate strawberries. You could also see into the kitchen which had a big glass window and see them making pastry by hand. The front of the shop was an honour system, there was an open till and you just put your money in and took out your change. As we were looking for lunch not dessert, we decided to press on.
A bit further on we found a tavern and it had great food. Annamaree had crab cakes that had feta, sun dried tomatoes and peppers in them and I had fish and chips. The fish was so delicious, so fresh and moist. They had some yummy pies too but we didn't indulge.
We headed on to Monterey and came across a sign saying headlights had to be on for the next 9 miles. There was a lot of fog around so we think that was the reason. Unfortunately we couldn't work out how to turn them on!
We eventually got to our turn off and found the motel using the GPS in the car. Huge improvement on the last one!
We decided to go the laundromat and do our washing. Annamaree got some directions from the office but we got a bit lost (we were walking) so we had to phone the hotel and get better directions. We were only one block away! After that we dropped it back to the hotel and went to the big shopping centre over the road for tea. There were lots of choices and we ended up at P. F. Changs Chinese family restaurant. It looked like it would be really pricey but it was very reasonable. I had Moo Goo Gai Pan which was stir fried chicken and prawns with book Chou and vegetables and really delicious. The serving was quite big so I only ate half and took the rest to go for tomorrow night's tea. Annamaree had Wonton soup and Lo Mein, a prawn and noodle dish.
Still recovering from the big day yesterday so we headed back to bed.

San Francisco Day 4
Up early today as we had to be at the Ferry Building at 7am for our trip to Yosemite. We all boarded a shuttle bus which took us to the Amtrak station at Emeryville (in between Berkley and Oakton) to catch the train. The platforms are level with the ground so you have to step up into the train. The carriages are two levels with the lower levels being for elderly or disabled passengers. There are toilets on both levels and also a dining car. Half the seats are plain seating and the rest have two pairs of seats facing each other with a table in between. There is also a power point so you can recharge your devices.
We hadn't had breakfast so we took turns at going to the dining car. When I got there the power had just gone off so no hot food. I had cereal with a fruit cup and bought a sandwich for lunch. When we stopped at the next station we lost all power. They called a mechanic and also another train. When the other train arrived we all got off and boarded the new train. We lost about an hour and a half. The journey continued past Stockton, Modesto and other towns through agricultural country. The train trip took 3.5 hours plus the delay.
We got off at Merced and were met by the tour guide and shuttle bus. He explained that there are often problems with the trains and they have to rejig the tour. Most of the group had booked a tram tour through the park (not us as it is an open tram and is very hot) and as the trip to the park was 2hrs 15 mins they would have missed that so he rebooked them for the 3pm tour and arranged for a bus to come from Oakton to pick us up at Merced as we would miss the train. He said that we would probably get home earlier than if we had caught the train.
The drive to Yosemite was not very exciting, the country was very dry and brown. You could see the Sierra Nevada mountains. It changed to be greener when we got to the national park and it could have been Australian ountryside that we were driving through. There are lots of landslides in the park and a very big one had covered the road so there is a temporary road around the slide. Then we saw the mountains and they were spectacular. We drove to the lodge where we had some free time for food and restrooms (no toilet on the bus!). Then those that were going on the tram ride left and Annamaree got a personal tour of the park in the shuttle bus. It is a big loop around the valley floor with places you can stop for the views. We saw giant Sequoia groves, granite cliffs and amazing wilderness. We stopped at places to photograph El Capitan, the Bridal Falls, the Half Dome, the natural corridor and much more.
As there was only two of us on the bus tour we finished early and went back to the lodge and checked out the souvenir shops and food hall. While we ate outside a possum and bird were fighting over who could be in the space. Very cute! Then it was time to go, we looked desperately to see a bear on the way out but no luck. I got a little bit of sleep on the way to Merced but not much as it wasn't very comfortable. When we got to Merced the second bus hadn't arrived so we got to stretch our legs and use the restrooms.
When the bus arrived we all piled on for the 2.5 hour trip back to San Francisco. This bus was even less comfortable and I had the air con right on me so I didn't get any sleep. Union Square was the lastt drop off and by the time we walked the 3 blocks to our motel (in a freezing wind) it was 11:45pm. It was the first time we were pleased to get to our motel.

San Francisco Day 3
Foggy and cool morning this morning. Headed off on the hop on hop off bus and got off at Chinatown to have a look around. Annamaree did some shopping and then we caught another bus to Fisherman's wharf as I wanted to go to Lombard Street which is a very crooked street. I queued up to buy tickets for the cable car that goes to the top end of Lombard Street. Then I had to join the even longer queue to get onto the cable car. It was about an hour wait and the wind coming off the waters in the bay was freezing. I had to buy a fleecy top from a street vendor to stay warm. I looked a treat today as I was wearing my floppy hat to keep the sun off my sunburn and wrapped my new fleecy around my neck. Thank goodness nobody knows me here!
Our turn finally came and we got on the cable car. The street we went up was so steep I didn't think we would make it. We got off at Lombard Street. There were amazing views of the city and the bay and the crooked street is amazing. Cars can go down it slowly in single file as it is like a zig zag and pedestrians can walk down either side. I walked down it (lots of steps) while Annamaree stayed at the top, took lots of photos, and walked back up. People live in houses on both sides and they must get sick of the number of people and cars going up and down. It was the highlight of my day.
We caught the cable car back to Fisherman's Wharf and had some lunch. Then we went to Pier 39 to see the sea lions. This is a colony that just turned up about 30 years ago and they have built docks for them which they lie on and fight and snooze. A lot of fun to watch but very stinky!
We were then hoping to do the bus tour that goes to the Golden Gate Park but the hop on hop off bus didn't come for an hour (they are supposed to come every 20 minutes) so we didn't make that so decided to have a look at the Ferry Terminal instead. There were markets outside and then inside were lots of shops and eating places. I bought a little china salt box and spoon and then had fish and chips for tea. The seafood is so fresh here as it is delivered daily.
We then caught a cab back to Union Square and went to the Westin St Francis Hotel and caught the external glass lift to the 32nd floor. Amazing views although the fog was rolling in so some of the buildings were partially obscured. We then had a coffee and fruit tart in their coffee shop. We thought it would be terribly expensive but was only $12 for the two of us for 2 coffees and two tarts. The two older ladies at the next table were very well coifed and dripping in jewels. They must have wondered who let the two old ducks next to them in! We then walked the 2.5 blocks back to our hotel.
Early start tomorrow as we are going to Yosemite National Park for the day.

San Francisco Day 2
Breakfast is included at our hotel so we went down for tea and toast. Then we decided to buy a 48 hour pass on the hop on hop off bus. It was quite cool this morning as there is fog first thing. We caught the first tour which went around town ten we changed to the tour that goes over the Golden Gate Bridge and to Sausalito. The bridge is magnificent and Sausalito is a very pretty town on the bay. On the way back we went through the Presidio which is a military base and also has one of the national war cemeteries and is the only cemetery in San Francisco.
When we got back we caught the downtown bus back to Union Square and had a look in a big discount shoe store and also went to Macy's. We then decided to take our shopping back to the hotel before catching another bus to Fisherman's Wharf to catch the night tour bus. The traffic was so bad that we missed the first night tour so we had dinner first and caught the next night tour. This tour went to different parts of San Francisco and was really interesting. It was really cool too as the fog had started rolling in again.
Somehow today I got really sunburnt on my shoulders and it was the first time I didn't put sunscreen on. Lesson learned.
When the tour finished, the bus took us to Union Square and we walked the three blocks back to our hotel. I am really grateful that Peter started me walking every day for the month before we came away. I have done so much walking and it hasn't been a problem. I can even do the hilly bits!

San Francisco Day 1
This morning we were up early and finished packing our bags, had some breakfast and checked out. Someone had told us that you had to get to the airport at least 2 hours early as they were queued up in the street having their bags weighed with the limits being strictly enforced. Well we were here 3 hours early and walked straight through! Luckily there is free wifi so I was able to update the blog,check mail etc. we are looking forward to cooler weather in San Francisco.
Well our flight was delayed for 1 hour because San Francisco is fogged in. We boarded the plane and after sitting for a while the Captain advised that we were delayed further and we were to get off the plane. New departure time 1:50pm. After sitting at the gate we thought we heard an announcement that we were to move to Gate 9 so we did. We were sitting waiting when we heard our names being paged to go to Gate 8. We wandered over only to be told to run down the gangway as the plane was about to leave! Every one else was on board so it was a bit embarrassing but at least we didn't miss the flight. We eventually arrived in San Francisco at 4pm.
We caught a cab to our hotel. The cab driver said that there was a big conference in town which explains why we had trouble finding affordable accommodation. The hotel leaves a bit to be desired but it is only 4 nights. It has one of those lifts like you see in movies where you open the door and then have to slide open a grill to get in.
After settling in we caught a cable car to Fisherman's Wharf. It was quite an experience. There is no engine, one man works the levers and another one works the brake. Not cheap though at $6 a ride. We went past Lombard Street and saw the crookedest street in the world. Will go back there before we go. When we got off the cable car we walked to Pier 33 where we were taking a tour to Alcatraz.
We had a cuppa then joined a queue to board the ferry. Yet another AFP (another f.....g photo)! Everywhere you go you have to have your photo taken and they try and make you buy it at the end.
We boarded the ferry along with a lot of other people and headed off into San Francisco Bay and around to Alcatraz Island. When we got there we took the tram up to the prison as Annamaree had sore feet. We were given audio players for the tour and it was really interesting as some of the former warders and prisoners narrated the tour. While we were looking at the cells I heard a familiar voice talk to me and it was Tania and Teresa again. How amazing to run into them again. After the tour we caut the tram back to the ferry. When we got back to the pier we went to Fisherman's Wharf for tea at Boudain's who make their own sour dough and sell chowder in bread cases. Then we took a taxi back to the motel.

Las Vegas Day 4
This morning we thought we would send some stuff home as we were both overweight when we flew from New York to Las Vegas even though we weren't charged. The valet came up with the forms and a trolley. We asked for an estimate and he contacted FedEx (who they have the contract with) who said it would be between $200 - $500 each! Needless to say we didn't go any further. We re packed our bags and I put the heaviest things in my carry on.
Today we wanted to check out some of the hotel/casinos we haven't seen so we started from Planet Hollywood and then went to the Paris. This hotel has a replica of the Eiffel Tower over it which is half the size of the original. You can take an elevator up to the viewing deck and get awesome 360 degree views of Las Vegas. There is a guide there that gives you the history of some of the hotels and the rivalry between some of the moguls. We had morning tea in the Madeleine's cafe which had the most amazing cakes and pastries.
Then we went to the Pink Flamingo which has a tropical garden which has live flamingoes and other birds and huge Koi fish.
Next stop was the Venetian and as the name suggests it is based on Venice. There are canals with bridges and gondoliers and it even has St Mark's Square without the pigeons! We took a ride in a gondola and the gondolier sang a few songs as we moved along the canals. Then we had lunch at St Mark's Square where there was a small stage and entertainment. In between the acts there was a man dressed up as a statue who stood there for over half an hour and barely moved. He was very good.
Then we went over to Caesar's Palace to see the moving statues but unfortunately they were being renovated and not working. However we still saw the beautiful interior.
It was so hot I looked like a beetroot by the time we were finished.
Annamaree had her photo taken with Dora the Explorer. She said it was for her granddaughter but I think she might be a closet fan!
We then went back to Planet Hollywood as we had booked to see Hitsville - The History of Motown. It was okay but we had more fun watching the mainly black audience who really get into it. I had wanted to see a Cirque de Soleil show but "O" was on a break and Mystique wasn't on the nights we had free. They must not have received the memo that I was coming!
After the sun went down we went out for some last minute shopping and had Chinese for tea.
Tomorrow we are off to San Francisco where mercifully it will be much cooler!

Las Vegas Day 3 - Grand Canyon
Today we did a tour to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon with Pink Jeep Tours. The jeeps are custom built 10 passenger tourers designed specifically for sightseeing and off road. We were the first to be picked up at 6am and then went to other hotels and picked up 6 more people. We were each given a breakfast bag with an apple Danish and a bottle of orange juice. We had 3 from Canada, 2 from Brazil, 1 from Israel and us. The lady from Israel was in Las Vegas for a Star Trek Convention!
The Jeep was very comfortable and we set off on the long drive to the Grand Canyon. We first went through the Mojave Desert and saw the creosote plants that are everywhere and then the strange looking Joshua Trees. We went past Lake Mead which is part of the Hoover Dam. Then we were on the famous Route 66 and in the state of Arizona and stopped at a small town called Seligman which was in a 1950's Route 66 Time Warp. We stopped for photos under the Route 66 sign and took more of the old cars and the weirdly decorated shops. We then travelled on through Arizona past amazing scenery.
Soon we were out of the desert and into the ponderosa pine forests of the Coconino Plateau and the beautiful mountains. When we got to the Grand Canyon, it just took your breath away. It was so spectacular and so huge. We walked along the rim trail and at every step there was a if fervent view. We went to several lookouts and then we had lunch at the Bright Angel Lodge in the Arizona Room. Then we went to Hopi House which had great souvenirs with a lot being made by the Indians.
Our guide then took us to a different spot and took our photos on this rock close to the edge. When it was my time I could've look, it was quite scary. He said that at least 12 people go over the edge every year!
Then it was back on the jeep for our trip home. Even though it wasn't part of the tour, he stopped at Hoover Dam on the way home so we could take some photos. It was amazing.
We were the first to be dropped off and were both so tired we decided to call it a day.
It is our last day in Las Vegas tomorrow as we leave for San Francisco on Friday morning, so we are hoping to get to some of the other hotels.

Las Vegas Day 2
Had a great sleep last night. The bed was so comfy even though it takes an effort to get into as it is so high!
We decided to ride the monorail this morning to see where everything was. To get there we had to walk through Paris and Bally's casinos. They are amazing. So opulent and they are like huge arcades with lots of shops and restaurants. The ceilings are painted like the sky with clouds and you feel like you are in a big city. The Paris Casino has a huge Eiffel Tower above it that you can ride up and inside the casino they have painted the ceiling as if you are looking up at it.
We decided to go to Viva Las Vegastamps as recommended by Gail Kirby. I suggested we get a taxi but Annamaree suggested we take the monorail to Sahara Street (the end of the line) and then get a taxi. Well we got off the monorail and walked down to Sahara Street and tried to flag down a taxi - no luck. Annamaree phoned for one and was told that they don't pick up from street corners or bus stops only from open businesses. So we decided to catch the bus. I have to say it wasn't the nicest end of town. The bus driver didn't know the place but let us off near the street number. We weren't really comfortable and were thinking of going back when I saw it down an alley. We crossed the street and when you went to the front door it was locked and you had to press the intercom for access. Then someone replied and unlocked the door. We had to walk down this corridor and it didn't look anything like a shop and we were getting a bit freaked out when we turned the corner into a room that was chock a block with rubber stamps. I have never seen so many in the one place. They make their own stamps and also sell online. I had a quick walk around but Annamaree meant business, she downed the hat and bag, picked up a basket and she was off shopping. She certainly helped the local economy along!
Then we walked back to the bus stop to catch a bus back to the monorail. It was so hot that our feet were getting burned so we had to move so we were totally in the shade. Eventually the bus came and when we got off we had a bit of a walk to the monorail but it was good to be in the cool again.
Annamaree decided to go for a swim and I wandered through the shops at the magic mile and then put $20 through the slot machines for Coralee and Kim. I had a few little wins and gt up to $50. I kept playing until I got down to my $20 and took it out. I didn't really know what I was doing but I got to play for a while and it didn't cost me anything.
When I returned we went out for tea and then wandered up to have a look at Ceaser's Palace and the Bellagio. As we were walking past the Bellagio the fountain started and it was different to the one we had already seen. The song was All that Jazz and it was amazing how the water moved to the music. Then we went to the lobby at Ceaser's Palace. It was so ornate with lots of marble, statues and fountains. It even has it's own wedding chapels. There are also lots of shops and eateries. We had trouble finding our way out it was so large. Then we went to the Bellagio. This was my favourite so far.
The ceiling of the lobby is covered in large glass flowers by Dale Chihuly and they are magnificent. Just off the lobby there is a garden scene with waterfalls, kites, and a garden shed that has lots of real birds in it. There are lots of flowers and snails made out of flowers. It is just lovely.
Then it was home as we have to get up early tomorrow for another adventure.

Las Vegas Day 1
This morning we caught the shuttle to the airport at 6:30am to catch a flight to Las Vegas. Both our bags were overweight but we didn't have to pay any extra other than the $25 per bag. Will have to send more stuff home or I won't be able to do any more shopping! The flight was 5 hours 17 minutes and we lost 3 hours in time because of the different time zone.
It is very hot here, it is 7:20pm and it it is 37 degrees Celsius and was over 40 degrees today. When you go to the outdoor places they have misters and fans that spray a fine mist at the same time.
We are staying at the Elara Hotel which is part of the Hilton Chain and fairly new. We have an apartment and it has a spa bath too! Annamaree is checking that out now. The blinds are automatic and close or open with the flick of a switch. We also have a kitchenette and a lounge room and two televisions. I will enjoy that as we have different tastes in shows.
We booked a trip to the Grand Canyon on Wednesday and hoping to go to see Cirque de Solei on Thursday night for their "O" show. Annamaree got sucked into going to a session on the hotel chain time share and for the 1.5 hour presentation we get a free dinner and show and will see the Motown Show. We even get a ride in a limousine as they take us to the other Hilton.
Our hotel is right beside the strip as it is joined to the magic mile shopping centre and Planet Hollywood Casino. The Bellagio is right over the road and we went there after dinner to see the free fountain display to music.
From a first glimpse this town is all about the gambling and night life. There were even poker machines at the airport. I don't think I could stay very long given my lack of interest in either.
We are quite tired tonight as we lost the three hours and the body hasn't caught up yet.
Will be out and about tomorrow if we can handle the heat.
Finally got to have a decent conversation with Peter tonight on FaceTime. The time difference makes it a bit easier.

New York Day 10
Bit of a sleep in today after our big day yesterday. We are leaving New York tomorrow so we did some washing before venturing out.
We walked down to Central Park and caught the hop on hop off bus ad got off at Chinatown to have a look around. Had lunch at Starbucks and then hopped on the bus again. As we were going past Battery Point I saw Tanya Wade And Teresa Dabrowski at the sandcastle. We had been texting trying to work out how to catch up so it was funny that in a city with so many people we actually saw them.
We got off at Pier 17 and both had a 20 minute massage, really cheap at $25, then we had a nice drink at an open air bar. I had a Piña Colada and Annamaree had a beer. Back on the bus and we got off at the Rockefeller Centre and wandered through the shops along 5th Avenue. We went into Saks and I was admiring this beautiful scarf which was so fine. Checked the price tag and it was $1250! We went to Level 8 where they had shoes from every famous designer. They were so expensive, even the ones that were 75% off were from $150 for a pair of casual sandals and it went up from there. I was expecting someone to ask us to leave because we were lowering the tone!
As it was our last night in New York we decided to have dinner in one of the restaurants Ann the concourse at the Rockefeller Centre. We had a lovely 3 course meal and then walked home.
Now we are packing our suitcases and trying not to be overweight! We are being picked up in the morning at 6:30am to go to the airport. Next stop - Las Vegas!

We walked down to Central Park and caught the hop on hop off bus ad got off at Chinatown to have a look around. Had lunch at Starbucks and then hopped on the bus again. As we were going past Battery Point I saw Tanya Wade And Teresa Dabrowski at the sandcastle. We had been texting trying to work out how to catch up so it was funny that in a city with so many people we actually saw them.
We got off at Pier 17 and both had a 20 minute massage, really cheap at $25, then we had a nice drink at an open air bar. I had a Piña Colada and Annamaree had a beer. Back on the bus and we got off at the Rockefeller Centre and wandered through the shops along 5th Avenue. We went into Saks and I was admiring this beautiful scarf which was so fine. Checked the price tag and it was $1250! We went to Level 8 where they had shoes from every famous designer. They were so expensive, even the ones that were 75% off were from $150 for a pair of casual sandals and it went up from there. I was expecting someone to ask us to leave because we were lowering the tone!
As it was our last night in New York we decided to have dinner in one of the restaurants Ann the concourse at the Rockefeller Centre. We had a lovely 3 course meal and then walked home.
Now we are packing our suitcases and trying not to be overweight! We are being picked up in the morning at 6:30am to go to the airport. Next stop - Las Vegas!

New York Day 9 - Niagara Falls
Early start today, up at 4am as the tour company was picking us up at 5am to take us to the airport to catch a flight to Buffalo New York State. As we went to a couple more motels to pick up people one person either slept in or was still out on the town as they were't waiting and couldn't be contacted. They missed the trip! The airline was Jet Blue and it was a fairly new plane and had so much room between seats. Learned later that the first 14 rows have extended leg room and are considered an upgrade. Lucky us!
The flight was only 57 minutes and we were given water, choice of tea, coffee or juice and a chocolate chip cookie or some nuts.
When we arrived a guide met us and we boarded a coach for the trip to Niagara Falls. We were a mixed group so every time the guide spoke he had to say it in English, Spanish and Italian. The first thing you see of the falls while still a bit away is this big cloud that looks like white smoke from a factory. Then you realise it is the spray from the falls.
When we arrived at the park we went straight to do the Maids of the Mist boat ride to the falls. There were so many people there already and the boats just keep going. We had to don the blue rain ponchos because of the mist. We caught the boat from the American side and you could see the Canadian boats just across the river. The boat goes right past the American falls which have lots of big rocks that the falls cascade over, then up to the Canadian Falls which are the Horseshoe Falls and are more spectacular. The boat then turns and goes back. It takes about 20 minutes.
Then we took the lifts to a lookout which came out over the river with great views of the falls, the Rainbow Bridge which has the border in the middle designated by both the Us and Canadian flags., and the city area of Niagara Falls (the town) in Canada. We walked a bit upstream on the American side to see the rapids which are just before the falls. The power of the water was just amazing and it's no wonder that both the US and Canada generate electricity from it. The guide said that boaters have been killed when they were fishing further upstream and their engine stalled. There is a point of no return that if you don't make it to the bank by then, the current takes you over the falls. If you go over the American Falls there is no hope because of all the rocks and only a slim chance on the Canadian falls.
We got back on the bus and crossed the Rainbow Bridge into Canada. We had to stop just off the bridge to go through immigration. You wait on the bus until they are ready and then we all go inside and one by one have to take our passport to be stamped and checked out. Then it was on to the Sheraton Hotel for lunch, the dining room was on the 8th floor and had ceiling to floor glass windows with views over both falls. There was also a little balcony where you could go out and take photos. Lunch was an all you can eat smorgasbord and it was great to get some food that we were used to.
Back on the bus and we went to the Whirlpools, the Floral Clock and the Canadian Power Generation Station. Then we went to the lookouts on the Canadian side. These were amazing with spectacular views of the Horseshoe Falls. So many people too. We had plenty of time to go to the different spots and get lots of photos.
Then we went to Goat Island which divides the Niagara River so that one side is US and the other is Canada. This meant we had to go through immigration again as we were going back into the US. Annamaree and I decided to have something to eat here rather than at the airport so we went to a restaurant on the upper level with great views of the American Falls. The Canadian falls just looked like ahold in the water from here and we joked that the Americans would love that as it is the only time the US falls are more spectacular. We had fish and chips and they were so yummy. Annamaree ordered tea and they only have cream, no milk!
We were then bussed to the airport for the flight back to New York. The plane wasn't as new so we didn't have the extra leg room but it was still very comfortable. The lights of New York are like shimmering gold at night. We got back at 9pm and by the time we got back to the motel it was 11:15pm. We were so tired!

New York Day 8

Forgot to mention that first up we went to the Apple Store which is open 24/7 and had a look around. The prices seem to be pretty standard around the world.
Then we went to FAO Schwarz the toy store. As they opened and you walked in, the staff lined the aisle and clapped. We felt like we were back on the Stampin' Up trip. Lots to see in the store including life size Lego models, a huge piano that you walk on to play and lots more.
Great day today, first up a tour of Radio City Music Hall, it is amazing. The stage is in 4 parts and they can go up or down independently of each other. Met one of the Rockettes who has been there for 12 years. The theatre is the largest indoor theatre and can seat over 6,000.
Then we went to the "top of the Rock" (Rockefeller) to the observatory decks. Great views and better than Empire State Building in my opinion. There are three different levels of observation decks and the lift takes you up 67 floors in 43 seconds! The ceiling of the lift is clear and you can see the structure of the lift well and they project images on to it. Lots of queues but they move along fairly quickly.
Annamaree decided she would go back to the hotel to rest her feet and we arranged to meet at 7:30pm at the Rockefeller Centre as we were going to see the views again at night time. I decided to walk to Macy's for another look. Bit further than I thought but lots to look at on the way. I then caught the subway back to the Rockefeller Centre and wandered around the shops and then had dinner in one of the restaurants that are in the concourse around the fountain.
When Annamaree returned we went back up to the "top of the Rock" but it was so crowded, I waited a while for the sun to go down and see the lights come on and then we left before it got too busy. We then walked the 7 blocks back to the motel.
We are off to Niagara Falls tomorrow and the bus is picking us up at 5am to take us to the airport. It is 10pm here so I had better get some shut eye before the alarm goes off!

New York Day 7
Today we caught the subway to Battery Point to catch the boat for our trip to the Statue of Liberty. Unfortunately it started to rain just as we got on the boat. It is only a short trip to Liberty Island and when you arrive you are given audio devices that tell you a bit of the history. Bit disappointing, I thought they could have gone into much more detail.
Then we had to put all our gear into a locker (cost $2) as we were going to the pedestal. There are 133 steps and because Annamaree's feet were sore we took the elevator which left only 26 steps. You could then go out on a narrow deck with great 360 degree views. It was a shame it was raining as it reduced the visibility. We couldn't find the elevator on the way down so ended up doing the stairs.
We picked up our gear, had something to eat and headed back to catch the boat back. We had also booked to go to Ellis Island which was nearby and where all the immigrants came to but it was 5 feet under water when superstore Sandy hit and it isn't yet reopened to tourists. Annamaree was disappointed as she was looking forward to going to Ellis Island.
When we got off the boat Annamaree decided to go back to the hotel as her feet were really hurting so I caught the subway to TimesSquare. I had lunch in the largest McDonald's store in the world. It was a 3 huge floors but I have to say the service was crappy.
I then walked 19 blocks back to the hotel as it was raining really hard and it was no fun dodging people and umbrellas. I only had one of those thin plastic ponchos on and it wasn't working very well. By the time I got back my shoes and myself were soaked.
A quick dry off and I decided to do some reading and have a nanna nap.
Annamaree was hungry as she had missed lunch so we went next door to Angelo's and had chicken noodle soup. It was delicious.
Tomorrow it is supposed to be fine so we will go to Radio City and the top of e Rockefeller Centre.
